For the second year in a row, C.H. Robinson has received a BNSF Sustainability Award. Presented by BNSF Railway—one of the largest freight railroads in the United States—the award recognizes companies demonstrating leadership in sustainable freight through operational efficiency, technology, and strong collaboration.

The recognition reflects how C.H. Robinson approaches sustainability: not as a separate initiative, but as part of how supply chains are designed, optimized, and run every day. As customer networks grow more complex, sustainability has become inseparable from performance—alongside service, cost, and resilience.

By combining global logistics expertise with data-driven decision making, C.H. Robinson works with customers to balance environmental goals with operational requirements. That includes helping customers reduce transportation-related Scope 3 emissions while improving load efficiency, visibility, and network performance.

The result is supply chain strategies that improve efficiency while reducing emissions—without compromising service or reliability.

From insight to action

That approach was central to this year’s recognition by BNSF. In the case of one multinational technology manufacturer, C.H. Robinson redesigned portions of the customer’s U.S. transportation network to support frequent inbound shipments from suppliers nationwide—while also aligning with the customer’s long-term sustainability targets.

C.H. Robinson applied network engineering and modal optimization to consolidate freight earlier in the supply chain journey and shift longer-haul volumes to intermodal rail—the most fuel-efficient and lower-emitting land transportation option.

The program launched in phased stages across shipment types and lanes, beginning with less-than-truckload freight and expanding to all order types. Ongoing optimization improved trailer utilization, reduced empty miles, and supported the opening of a new production facility.

The result was a more efficient transportation network that also served as a strategic lever for sustainability. In its first year, the redesigned network reduced the customer’s transportation-related Scope 3 emissions by more than 60%, while providing the visibility and reporting needed to track progress against emissions goals with confidence.

Sustainability as a supply chain advantage

This recognition from BNSF reinforces the impact of supply chain design done in close partnership with customers. By embedding sustainability into how networks are planned, executed, and measured every day, C.H. Robinson helps customers navigate complexity to turn sustainability goals into measurable, operational results.
